About Ginger

Here at Blasta Delights, I have researched the various ginger roots that are available to the market. Here in Europe, we predominantly have Chinese ginger in the supermarkets, but I have started seeing Peruvian ginger in some other supermarkets. This is probably due to the lower cost of shipping from South America than China currently at the moment.

You can get ginger that is paler in colour, nearly white than yellow and this root has lower gingerol content, the essential oil that gives the root its spiciness and properties of anti-inflammatory and antiseptic.

About Me

Hello, and welcome to my new culinary discovery and creation of ginger inspired goodies. I am Áine, originally from Dublin and living here in Kerry.

Back in 2016, I was living in Canada and I was looking for a sweet treat in the supermarket. That is when I saw the crystallised ginger on the supermarket shelf calling out to me. That is when I got the idea to create this addictive ginger treat myself. Finding inspiration and creativity in items sitting on supermarket shelves became a regular occurrence for me. I gifted my new creations to friends and family and my interest in creating my ginger treats flew from there.

I learnt more about the different gingers sourced from countries such as China, Australia and Peru. I focus on using organic Peruvian ginger for its sustainable agricultural approaches as well as its unique level of spice.

About My Crystallised Ginger

So traditionally crystallised ginger is made using young ginger root, as the root is far softer and less fibrous, making it easier to work with. The cons of this is that the nutrients are less developed, meaning lower levels of iron and Vitamin C, which ginger is known to have high quantities of.
As the root grows naturally the nutrient content becomes more denser, getting boost of iron and Vitamin C.

The variety grown in Peru is an organic criollo variety, which is known to have a bolder taste and more gingerol present. Gingerol being what makes the ginger spicer and is an essential oil, which gives it the properties of being antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. So since my ginger has higher spice levels it means my crystallised ginger packs a punch. So a little bit goes a long way.
