Fresh Peruvian Ginger Root (100g)
Fresh Peruvian Ginger Root (100g)
Did you know Peruvian ginger root offers better health benefits than Chinese ginger root that you find. This is down to the higher concentration of gingerol and shogaol, which are the beneficial compounds in ginger root. Peruvian ginger root has 3 times the concentration of gingerol, though is far small than the ginger root that you find in the supermarket, which is mostly from China. I have grown some ginger root in the past and have a bunch of rhizomes, that is the ginger root, that have actually sprouted a few buds. I have in the past grown the root myself. You can see here on some highlights on my instagram page the plant gradually growing – Instagram link.
Before I started growing mine I was stuck to Youtube seeing people in obviously very warm climates grow ginger in huge amounts. Some great videos out there. I got organic compost and I halved a 5l water container. One half of the bottle I put holes into which will hold the soil and the other half underneath to catch and hold any water draining off. I grew mine just at some sliding doors. I dream to have space for a polytunnel, one day.
These instructions from Gardeners World are good to grow your own ginger – growing instructions. I love following The Frenchie Gardener and he has a great Youtube channel, this link will show you some of his ginger growing and other ginger relative videos – ginger videos. Also the Epic Gardener is a good one to watch – some of his ginger videos.
Of course you can use this ginger for all your culinary adventures for cooking or make some tea. For storing in the freezer, I blend with some water and fill an ice cube tray and use for when needed. Though it keeps very well just on the counter top. I recommend not putting it into the fridge, as it’s likely to go off quicker.
